World War One fighter pilots are not usually the subject of choice for online slots – least of all German ones. Well, the Red Baron breaks the mould, focusing on Manfred Richthofen, reportedly the best airborne ‘ace’ of any nation at a time when people were fighting in biplanes. This slot is mostly the plain and simple fare you might expect from Aristocrat. At the same time there are a couple of interesting additions, in the form of ‘missions’ and the 243-ways ‘reel power’ setup.

The graphics are very blocky and plain, all with retro images of the time such as a wooden radio cabinet and target. These really feel like they were just transplanted from an old mechanical slot. Simple upgrades for the design would make a big difference to this and to many other Aristocrat slots. Other than some music during the intro and special sounds during the missions game, the beeps and clicks are from the same library as the other Aristocrat slots. At least the missions, which gives you points for each plane collected (shot down) gives the Red Baron something different. You will have the potential for a big pay-out, especially with the front view of the biplane sometimes appearing stacked on the reels.

There are no win-lines in the Red Baron. This uses the ‘Reel Power’ system, which lets you select the number of reels to play and then allows all combinations from left to right (starting in the left hand reel) to be winning lines. It makes little sense to reduce the reels for this, which gives you 243 potential winning combinations for each spin. This will result in a lot of wins on occasion, especially when symbols are stacked. You can spin for 20c in this game, right up to $100. Two symbols share the top spot in terms of the pay-outs. These are a portrait of Richthofen himself, and his red plane. You get 1500 coins for 5 of either – though the Red Baron himself is just ahead with 1000 coins for 4, compared to 500 from the plane. The portrait of a lady, barrage balloon, dog and then the radio make up the rest of the unique winning symbols, playing cards are also included. There are two special symbols. The first is a medal, which only appears on the middle reel. This doubles any win it is a part of. It substitutes for everything, including the scatter / bonus symbol. Targets kick of both the mission and free spins games; these appear on the middle 3 reels only.
There are two interlinked features, both of which kick off when you hit 3 of the target symbols in the middle 3 reels (or 2 and the wild (medal)). First you get a ‘mission’. Here you choose from a higher number of planes with a big multiplier of your triggering win, or a lower number with a smaller multiplier. As the bonus round plays, you collect planes. The concept here is that you can take a smaller win regularly, or gamble and go for a bigger one. Whichever option you choose, if you go get 25 or more planes during your spins, you get 40x your triggering bet. The free spins has no different symbols or multipliers, the medal (doubles wins) is still involved on the reels, and the 243 ways setup can potential give you a lot of winning combinations.
Baron
This is actually quite an entertaining game to play, though the graphics and sounds are really not designed to help. The smaller number planes for the missions seemed very easy to complete (your mileage may vary obviously). This extra feature did add an extra element to the game which is missing from a lot of the Aristocrat slots. With a graphics brush up, this could make the grade as a slot to recommend.

Red Baron Slot Machine

Red Baron is a 5-reel, 243-ways-to-win slot machine from Aristocrat Leisure, which is themed around the famous German fighter pilot from World War I – Manfred Von Richthofen, better known as Red Baron. The game benefits from the innovative Free Spins feature, awarding up to 15 free spins with up to a 140x multiplier.

The reels are mostly populated by theme-related symbols, such as the Red Baron himself, a Zeppelin, radio, dog, the Red Baron's plane, and a girl. In addition, you will find the regular playing card icons – J, Q, K, 9, and 10, which make up the low-value symbols on the reels.

Wilds are represented by a Pour la Mérite medal, and they can only land on the third reel, substituting for all other symbols to form a winning. Scatters come in the form of a target that pop up on the reels 2, 3, and 4, and they are key to triggering the main feature.

What separates Red Baron slot machine from other titles is, no doubt, the payline selection, so before you start rolling, make sure to use the 'Reels' feature to select the number of active paylines – 3, 9, 27, 81, or 243.

To trigger the Free Spins feature, you are required to land three target Scatters anywhere on the reels 2, 3, and 4. That will award 15 free spins, however, before the game starts, you need to predict the number of plane symbols that will land during the feature. If your guess is correct, you will win the multiplier included in the mission you chose.

If it happens that you don't see enough planes to accomplish the mission, then you will still be awarded the prize from the mission, but without the multiplier. It should be noted that the iron cross medals that land on the middle reel will turn into Wilds during this round, and each win a Wild contributed to will be multiplied by 2x, 3x, or 5x.

Gamble feature is activated by clicking on the 'Gamble' button. Here, you need to guess the color or the suit of the next card drawn, and potentially double or quadruple your balance. You are allowed to guess up to five times, but be cautious, since any incorrect guess will leave you empty-handed.

The highest potential win on Red Baron slots is 1,500 coins.

The Aristocrat release is a highly volatile slot with an RTP of 95.70%. The Free Spins feature is indeed innovative and rewarding thanks to up to 140x multipliers, but it can also be frustrating and hard to trigger. The graphics are a bit outdated, but if you enjoy the WWI theme and play for the sake of entertainment, then you may want to give it a try.

The Red Baron game itself is a classic Aristocrat 5 reel game. This generation of games from Aristocrat share similar and familiar sounds and graphic effects.

You know when you are playing one of these games, because the sound effects are always the same. We love the fairground music when you get a big win.
